The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique for promoting relaxation, stress reduction and overall well-being. The word “Reiki” means Universal Life Energy. In the west, this subtle energy healing is known as Biofield Science. Because there is such a deep connection between mind and body, Reiki can help facilitate a state of overall relaxation that can be of great physical benefit. Through the gentle laying on of hands, healing energy is transferred from the practitioner to the client. The ultimate intention is not to cure, but rather remove energetic blocks to return the body/mind to the ideal conditions for healing to occur.

Studies have shown that when a person is relaxed, blood pressure and heart rate decrease, blood flow to the digestive system increases, and breathing becomes more rhythmic and slow. This facilitates an ideal environment for the body’s innate healing resources to work. Clients often leave a treatment feeling refreshed, relaxed, clearer and more in tune with themselves.

Reiki is often used in hospitals to help calm and prepare patients for chemotherapy, surgery and anxiety-provoking procedures. Studies has shown that Reiki treatments may decrease wound healing time and shorten hospital stays. Other indications for Reiki include: headaches, chronic pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Reiki can help clients become more aware of inner processes both emotionally and mentally.

What to expect during a Reiki Treatment:

Following a brief review of medical history, clients are invited to get comfortable, fully dressed, on a padded massage table with pillows and light blanket. The room is warm and I often play relaxing music. In most cases, I begin with a simple grounding meditation to welcome and encourage my client to fully arrive, settle and open to their treatment. After a few moments assessing their energy field, I will begin to apply a light touch at specific areas of their body where energy is felt to be blocked and/or they are experiencing discomfort and dis-ease.

Towards the end of the session, I will once again ground my client by placing my hands on their feet or shoulders. Once upright, they are encouraged to sit for a bit and enjoy a glass of filtered water before getting off the table and heading back into their day.

It is not uncommon for clients to fall asleep or find themselves in a dreamy state of consciousness. Some clients feel a sense of warmth, tingling, pulsations, or an emotional release. Others, simply an overall feeling of wellness and a sense of returning to themselves.

*With permission and consideration of a client’s current state of being, I often add the application of essential oils either topically and/or aromatically.
